Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture & Skin Health in Oakland

Β Prajna Choudhury, L.Ac. | Energy Matters Oakland | Specialist Certifications in Dermatology & Facial Rejuvenation

There is a goal Prajna Choudhury, L.Ac. holds for every facial rejuvenation patient she works with: that they leave loving their face. Not a face that has been numbed or erased, not one frozen into an approximation of youth, but a face that is genuinely more alive β€” better circulation, restored vitality, and the natural expression of a body that is being cared for from the inside out.

Prajna holds specialist certifications in both facial rejuvenation and dermatology, and has spent nearly two decades integrating these practices into her broaderΒ Chinese medicine practice at Energy Matters in Oakland. She offers the full range of acupuncture-based facial treatments β€” facial rejuvenation acupuncture, acupuncture facelift, microneedling, and nanoneedling β€” alongside deep clinical expertise in skin conditions treated through Chinese medicine. She serves patients across Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, Piedmont, Emeryville, Rockridge, the East Bay, and beyond.

The Chinese Medicine Approach to Beauty

Conventional anti-aging medicine works largely by suppressing or masking the signs of aging β€” paralyzing muscles with Botox, filling volume loss with synthetic fillers, cutting and repositioning tissue surgically. These approaches address the surface while leaving the underlying conditions that produce aging intact.

Chinese medicine approaches beauty from the opposite direction. The face is understood as a direct reflection of the health of the internal organs, the quality of blood circulation, the state of the nervous system, and the overall vitality of the person. When those systems are in balance and well-nourished, the face reflects that. When they are depleted, stressed, or out of balance, the face reflects that too. Genuine and lasting facial rejuvenation, in this framework, requires treating both the face and the whole system behind it.

This is why Prajna's facial rejuvenation work is inseparable from her broader practice. Every facial treatment begins with a Chinese medicine intake that assesses the patient's overall constitution β€” their digestive health, their sleep, their stress levels, their hormonal picture. The face is treated in direct relationship to what is happening systemically. Patients who also work with Prajna onΒ nervous system regulation and stressΒ or onΒ hormonal and women's health conditionsΒ often find their skin improving as a reflection of their overall health improving.

Facial Rejuvenation Treatments

Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture is the foundation of Prajna's cosmetic practice. Ultra-fine needles are placed at specific points on the face and body β€” simultaneously stimulating collagen and elastin production locally while addressing the systemic patterns that underlie the skin's presentation. The result is an improvement in skin texture, tone, and luminosity that builds progressively over a course of treatment rather than appearing and disappearing between appointments.

Initial consultations are 90 minutes and include an in-depth assessment of your skin concerns, your overall health picture, and your goals. A typical course of treatment is 6 to 12 weekly sessions, followed by a maintenance schedule tailored to your individual response. The treatment is deeply relaxing β€” most patients find the combination of facial work and whole-body acupuncture produces a quality of rest that extends beyond the session itself.

Facial rejuvenation acupuncture addresses: fine lines and wrinkles, loss of skin tone and elasticity, uneven skin texture and complexion, puffiness and fluid retention, dullness and poor circulation, and the overall appearance of fatigue and stress in the face.

Fee: $205

Acupuncture Facelift

The acupuncture facelift is an advanced treatment for patients with more targeted concerns β€” deeper lines, more significant sagging, or specific areas requiring focused attention. It builds on the foundation of facial rejuvenation acupuncture with additional techniques and a more intensive treatment protocol.

Where facial rejuvenation acupuncture is appropriate as an entry point for most patients, the facelift protocol is indicated when the goals are more specific or the presentation more advanced. Prajna will assess which approach is most appropriate at your initial consultation.

Fee: $275

Microneedling

Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering the body's natural healing response and stimulating collagen and elastin production. The results β€” improved skin texture, reduced fine lines, diminished scarring, and a more youthful overall appearance β€” build over a series of treatments and continue improving for months after each session.

Prajna integrates her Chinese medicine background into every microneedling session β€” assessing the skin condition systemically, supporting healing through the same constitutional understanding that informs her acupuncture practice, and selecting supporting products according to the principles of non-toxicity and Chinese herbal efficacy that guide her broader approach to skin health.

Microneedling is effective for: fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, loss of skin firmness, and overall skin renewal. It is safe for all skin tones when performed by a licensed practitioner.

A typical microneedling course involves 3 to 6 sessions spaced approximately one month apart, allowing the collagen-building process to progress between treatments. For patients over 30, one additional treatment per decade of age is often recommended as a baseline course.

Fee: $500

Nanoneedling

Nanoneedling uses tiny silicone tips that stimulate the surface of the skin without penetrating it β€” making it an excellent option for patients for whom microneedling is not indicated, including those with certain skin conditions, sensitivities, or concerns about the delicate skin around the eye area. It produces similar surface improvements in skin luminosity, texture, and hydration through a gentler mechanism.

Nanoneedling is particularly well-suited for: the eye area and other delicate skin zones, patients with skin conditions that preclude microneedling, those newer to cosmetic acupuncture who prefer a more gradual introduction, and as a maintenance treatment between microneedling sessions.

Fee: $195

Skin Conditions & Dermatology

Prajna's dermatology certification reflects a clinical depth in skin conditions that goes well beyond cosmetic concerns. Skin conditions β€” eczema, acne, rosacea, psoriasis, dermatitis, and others β€” are, in Chinese medicine, systemic conditions that express themselves on the skin's surface. The skin tells a story about what is happening internally: the state of the digestive system, the quality of blood, the presence of heat or dampness or deficiency in the internal environment. Treating the skin means treating the system.

This is whereΒ Chinese herbal medicineΒ becomes particularly valuable. Acupuncture alone addresses many aspects of skin conditions, but the daily therapeutic input of a carefully prescribed herbal formula β€” taken internally, and sometimes applied topically β€” can address the constitutional patterns underlying chronic skin conditions in ways that neither acupuncture nor Western pharmaceuticals typically can. Prajna offers non-toxic, natural alternatives to the steroid creams and antibiotics that are the standard first-line treatments for most skin conditions, providing more lasting resolution rather than temporary suppression.

She works with: eczema and atopic dermatitis, acne (including hormonal acne), rosacea, psoriasis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, urticaria (hives), dry skin conditions, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For patients whose skin conditions are connected to underlying hormonal patterns, herΒ women's health and hormonal expertiseΒ is directly applicable.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is acupuncture facial rejuvenation different from Botox or fillers?

Botox paralyzes the muscles that create expression lines; fillers add synthetic volume to areas that have lost tissue. Both address the surface while leaving the underlying causes of aging intact β€” and both require ongoing repeat treatments to maintain results. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture works by stimulating the body's own collagen and elastin production, improving circulation, and supporting the internal health that is reflected in the skin. Results build over a course of treatment and continue improving over time rather than fading between appointments. There are no neurotoxins, no synthetic materials, and no downtime.

How many treatments does it take to see results?

Most patients notice changes in skin quality β€” luminosity, texture, hydration β€” within the first few sessions. More significant structural improvements in tone, firmness, and the appearance of lines typically become apparent over a course of 6 to 12 weekly treatments. Results continue to develop for several months after completing a course, as the collagen-building process initiated by treatment continues to progress.

Is microneedling right for me?

Microneedling is appropriate for most patients interested in skin renewal, texture improvement, or scar reduction. It is not recommended for patients with active acne breakouts, certain chronic skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis in the treatment area), oral herpes in active phase, pregnancy or nursing, or certain other health conditions. Prajna conducts a thorough intake before any microneedling treatment to determine which approach is most appropriate. Nanoneedling is an excellent alternative for patients for whom microneedling is not indicated.

Can facial acupuncture help with hormonal acne?

Yes β€” hormonal acne is one of the presentations that responds particularly well to Chinese medicine treatment, because the treatment addresses the hormonal pattern underlying the skin condition rather than suppressing the skin's response to it. Prajna's combined expertise inΒ women's health and hormonal conditionsΒ and dermatology makes her particularly well-equipped to treat hormonal acne comprehensively.

Do I need to choose between facial rejuvenation and whole-body acupuncture?

No. Prajna's approach integrates facial work with whole-body treatment. Every facial rejuvenation session includes body acupuncture points that support the systemic health underlying the skin's presentation. For patients interested in comprehensive care, combining facial rejuvenation with ongoing support forΒ stress and nervous system regulationΒ or other health goals is both possible and beneficial β€” the two support each other.
