Super Socks: Why To Try Compression

I’ve been using compression socks on and off for years—originally to help with post-dance leg fatigue—but recently I’ve started wearing them when I walk my dog or during work. I didn’t plan to, but after leaving my calf guards on one day, I noticed how much lighter my legs felt.

I highly recommend them for long flights, standing for long periods, and those who sit for extended hours (therapists). As with most things, trying a few brands, materials, and levels of compression (the material may change the tactile sensation) feels right for you.

There are many brands and compression levels available. I typically use 15–20 mmHg compression (20–30 mmHg is firmer and more medical-grade). I have regular socks for day-to-day use and calf sleeves for longer walks or full workdays. I could use longer socks, but haven’t found a pair I love yet.

Compression socks work by applying gentle pressure at key circulation points—the mid-foot, ankle, and calf— which presumably help with circulation and reduce heaviness or swelling.  Medical-grade versions are custom-fitted and used for specific conditions like DVTs or lymphedema, while standard compression socks are great for general comfort and support.

They’re all made with elastin fibers, but you can choose from materials like cotton, bamboo, or more synthetic fibers. Personally, I prefer synthetic ones for the feet and calves, though I also like the feel of bamboo.

They can be pricey, but I have bought less pricey ones, and they just weren't as good.

Here are a few I’ve tried and liked:
