Unlocking Surgical Success

Acupuncture Clinic Blog

Over my 30 years in practice, I have treated hundreds of patients pre and post-surgery. Patients have repeatedly told me how helpful the treatments were for them, and how impressed their surgeons were with the ease and speed of their recovery.

This past February, I had my first experience with surgery (hip replacement) and even though I know the power of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for this situation, I have to say I was blown away by just how much it helped. So much so I feel the need to let the world know: don’t get surgery without the support of Chinese medicine!

Why Acupuncture and Chinese medicine pre-surgery:

  • If you are navigating pain, acupuncture can be hugely beneficial in helping to manage pain levels.

  • Surgery - minor or major - is stressful both physically and emotionally. Stress can temporarily weaken your immune system. You want to go into surgery as strong as possible to avoid infections. Acupuncture, Chinese herbs, and food-based supplements are great for bolstering your immune system. (Do stop all your supplements and herbs pre-surgery, as directed.)

  • And acupuncture is great for calming your nervous system.

Why Acupuncture and Chinese medicine post-surgery:

I’ve always counseled my patients that any surgery is major surgery, no matter how minor. Any time your body is cut or otherwise invaded, your body reacts with a fight or flight response, even when you are under anesthesia.

  • Using the power of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine to aid in recovery is a fantastic pairing of ancient and modern medicine to more quickly recover from the trauma of surgery.

  • For thousands of years, Chinese herbal medicine has been used to help speed the recovery of professional martial artists i.e. soldiers. This area of our pharmacopeia is called “hit medicine,” and is highly developed. Using appropriate herbal formulas post-surgery is phenomenal support. In addition, we have herbal formulas that aid in recovery from anesthesia.

  • As soon as you are physically able, getting back into the acupuncture clinic for treatment will help with tissue repair, clearing the anesthesia, and allowing the nervous system to settle and reset.

Sidebar about my surgery recovery: even though I have had so many patients tell me about their experiences, I was still amazed by the lack of bruising post-surgery (which can be extensive after hip replacement) and the speed of tissue healing. This stuff works!

I can’t say enough about the power of acupuncture pre and post-surgery.
